You see a stray dog. What do you do. Call the police or try to catch him yourself

Depends on the dog. If it didn't seem aggressive, I'd try to help him. If he wants to bite my face off, he's on his own. My old house was attractive to stays. And my older dog was the welcoming community. Only one dog was people aggressive.. all the others, I found tags and called owners. One German Shepard mix stayed with me five years until he passed on.

You do both! Keep your eyes on the dog - DO NOT CHASE IT (Worst. Possible. Option. Ever.), keep your distance but keep eyes on he/she. While doing so call your local animal control/police and give a description at the same time keeping a distance. Tell them you are watching the dog, and staying near to it and when a cop/animal person shows up, point them in the direction. The dog is in no danger of the cops or animal control, they don't kill dogs for no reason (let's be serious) they will get it safely to a shelter and get it checked, vetted, and such and if there's no owner within 10days I believe, and the dog isn't aggressive, then they choose to put it for adoption or to euthanize (depending on if its a kill or no-kill shelter) but remember

a.) NEVER CHASE A DOG, you put it at risk of running into traffic, running farther from where its starting point was, or being scared and turning aggressive unsure emoticon and
b.) You can't trust a stray dog, especially a hurt one - Never put yourself in a position to get yourself hurt without having proper training or knowledge... If you choose to pursue a dog you'll need bribes (food, treats, human food, or water) and loop leash so if you catch it you can keep it at a comfortable distance. smile emoticon thanks for reading all of this - I'm going to college to be a vet and I've been working with shelters and rescues for about 10yrs, I'm not a know-it-all but some people don't know these things and I feel if I at least inform them then I'm doing something smile emoticon hope you find out if he/she was caught..... Poor thing.
